Many guesthouse owners and operators wonder whether they need an international sustainability certificate, whether it is worth considering, whether the whole sustainability craze is a passing fad that will die down within 2-3 years, and why does a guesthouse need to deal with this issue at all?

The project launched by Berzi Birtok and Innotime partially answers these questions, presenting step by step why it is good for a guesthouse to move towards sustainable tourism, why an international certificate is good, and what needs to be and can be done to ensure that a guesthouse obtains it.

According to booking.com's 2024 sustainability research, 45% of global travelers are more attracted to accommodations with sustainable certifications, and 67% of the 31,500 people surveyed also added that international consistency across different certifications is critical for properly interpreting sustainability messages.

In response to guest demands expressed during the research, booking.com discontinued its own sustainable tourism rating system on March 25, 2024 and will now only display sustainable tourism labels recognized based on international standards, and you can filter on the site for accommodations that meet international standards based on sustainability criteria. A similar decision has been made by several international OTAs in the past few years.

To support the sustainability steps of uncertain and often doubtful guesthouses, Berzi Birtok from Mád and Innotime Hungary Kft., the Hungarian representative of Green Destinations, are now launching a joint program, available to everyone free of charge. Their goal is to present step by step over the next 3 months what a guesthouse operator can do for sustainability, how to incorporate sustainability messages into their communication and how to achieve the Good Travel Seal certification. They will also highlight why it is worth investing in ensuring sustainability for a guesthouse, even in the short term.

One of the Berzi Birtok guesthouses in Mád is designed primarily to accommodate adult guests, while the other is also ideal for larger corporate programs and families. The goal of obtaining the Good Travel Seal certification is to meet the increasingly frequent economic-social-environmental sustainability needs of guests, while the owners, Dóra Berzi-Pásztor and her husband, as parents of young children, want Mád and the Tokaj Wine Region to be livable even when their children and grandchildren are operating the guesthouses many years from now.
