Black Cat Weekend – an event to support responsible cat ownership
August 17th is International Black Cat Appreciation Day. On this occasion, the DámPont Visitor Center in Tamás is hosting a two-day program series, which aims to raise awareness about responsible cat ownership and the dangers of domestic cats in maintaining the forest ecosystem. Innotime employees will also participate in the program as organizers and speakers.
As part of the program, visitors will also be able to meet the kittens of the Dius Cumizdája Kitten Rescue Foundation, and there will be an opportunity not only to pet the kittens, but also to adopt rescued kittens. On the second day of the event, families will also be treated to a live quiz game, which will also focus on responsible cat ownership.
Black cats still have a bad reputation in many European countries, in many places they were associated with witchcraft in the Middle Ages, and there are also many folk superstitions that black cats bring bad luck. These historical and cultural factors have together shaped the negative image that still lives in many cultures about black cats today. However, it is worth noting that there are also nations where black cats are considered lucky, for example in Japan and in certain parts of Great Britain, black cats are symbols of good luck. Superstitions, legends, and tales related to cats will also appear in the program, the youngest can participate in the interactive puppet show by Cs. Katalin Mayer, the older ones can listen to tales about black cats during the mesemaran, and different age groups can make handmade black cat toys together at the event, or draw a constantly changing, giant cat drawing as part of the asphalt drawing program. Adults will also find the interactive presentation useful and interesting, demonstrating how ChatGPT can be used to support responsible cat ownership, and the world of black cats and magic will also be presented in a lecture.
As a precursor to the event, the quiz game series announced by the DámPont Visitor Center is still ongoing, which tests children's knowledge in 5 different topic areas (the quiz questions are available at https://www.visittamasi.hu/2024/07/26/nyari-kvizjatek-a-macskakrol/ page), and a fairy tale illustration competition was also announced for the youngest children, details of which can be found on https://www.visittamasi.hu/2024/07/28/rajzpalyazat-ovodasoknak-es-also-tagozatosoknak/ are available at the link.
Tamási and its surroundings await visitors with a variety of program options during the four-day long vacation. In addition to the programs of the 65th Tamási Riding Days and the weekend of the black cats, it is worth planning a lookout tour that is easy to complete with small children in the four-day program, as we can admire the panorama from several lookouts in Tamási, the birdlife of the Pacsmag lakes and the settlements of Regöly and Pár can be discovered on two-wheeled bicycle paths, and the Tamási thermal bath and the Wildlife Park are also unmissable - and of course the DámPont Visitor Center's expanded exhibition with new experience elements is also worth trying.
